First Contact

Hanrahan slid his body a little to the left, watching the Triton base. This was going to be the first of their assaults on the minor corporations. These fledgling groups were arms of SVER, Raven and Valor. But they were self-sufficient, and it was great PR. Hanrahan looked over his shoulder and back down the cliff; the Warriors were waiting, barely visible in the early morning light. He looked back over the cliff’s edge and down at the base. He swept his binoculars to view the entire base one last time, and then moved on. When he reached the bottom of the cliff he turned to the squad, “Alright boys, Tyrants are in position, once I give the signal we move.” Hanrahan got on the circuit, “Sir, everyone is in position, are you ready?” A voice crackled to life, “Do it.” Hanrahan pointed his flare gun at the sky and fired.
“TITAN!” The Warriors charged the base, slipping in and out of cover. Across the valley the Tyrant’s began firing with their LMGs and Sniper rifles. Bullets smacked into the Triton soldiers, dead bodies fell from watch towers and landed on the ground. The Warrior men moved quickly inside of the base, breaching the doors without even needing the charges they had brought. They moved like a snake, looking for its prey. Callahan split the squad into two teams, the groups of men moved silently, stepping over dead bodies and moving towards the data center. They quickly reached the main computer, Callahan plugged in the uplink drive and then got on the comm, “Thirty minutes and the files will be downloaded.”
In his post, Carrizo nodded. He caressed the huge sniper rifle. The 38 mm beast looked like it was made to kill elephants not men. He peered through his spotting scope, looking for targets. What he saw made his heart sink.
“Hanrahan, tanks, moving up from the south, multiple APC’s behind them along with infantry support. Looks like they’re Raven soldiers.” Hanrahan nodded to himself, “ Petrenko, you know what to do.” The man nodded and his squad ghosted to their positions along the cliff. “Rockets out.” The entire squad quickly took out their laser guided rockets. “Take out the lead and rear vehicles, clean up the rest afterwards. Alpha team, your lead tank, Bravo, rear APC.” The men all confirmed. They quickly designated each vehicle with the lasers, and then waited, “On my mark.” Petrenko quickly took aim with his own launcher, and then said quietly, “Mark.” Eight rockets launched in near unison. The streaking flames coming from the back burned the foliage if flew past. They quickly gained altitude, and the dropped. The warheads came down on the vehicles like the hands of hell. The two marked vehicles exploded, infantry around the targets was ripped to shreds by debris. The tank behind the first one revved its engine, and slammed into the hulking mass of shredded metal. “Sir, they’ve pushed the destroyed tank off the road.” Petrenko shook his head, “So much for that tactic. Alright, mark and fire, take out as many as you can.”
Carrizo sighted another soldier, took a breath, and fired. The bullet shattered the man’s entire torso. Nothing was left of his body except for his shins. Carrizo grinned and sighted another man. He pulled the trigger and the man was no more. From this range he feared no bullets, but he should have been watching his back. Only a flash of birds made him realize someone was behind him. He quickly pulled out his F57 pistol and turned, taking cover behind a tree. He peered around and saw a Raven sniper. The man had not noticed Carrizo, and Carrizo planned to keep it that way until he was ready.  He moved around behind where the sniper had lain down. Now the man was taking aim at his squad. Carrizo walked silently up behind him, and felt a cold gun barrel press against his own head. “Gotcha.”
Callahan heard a gunshot ring out from where Carrizo had been, he quickly got on the circuit, and yelled for Carrizo to respond but the man said nothing. He got on a private link to Hanrahan, “Sir, I think Carrizo is down.”  Hanrahan said, “Damn, have someone go to where he was, and make sure he’s still there.” Callahan looked at his squad, “Abrams, Jackson, go check on the commander.”  The two men nodded and headed off into the brush.
Abrams motioned to Jackson that he had seen something. The two men moved quickly up towards the item, it was Carrizo’s helmet; the visor was spattered with blood. The men continued forward, they found the body of a dead soldier, but this time it wasn’t Carrizo. They spent 15 minutes, but found nothing except the helmet. “Sir, Carrizo has disappeared.”
